It is best to call first before coming to pick large quantities of berries just to make sure.

ChickensNew chicken coop

Our new chicken coop (the Tajma-coopdeville) is finished and our beautiful hens are busy at work. In addition to their free-range diet, we feed our girls a freshly milled, customized WHOLE GRAIN mixture. You won't find eggs like ours anywhere else.

GarlicGarlic

Over the last two years, we've been preparing our soil to grow garlic. First we scattered oat seed to cut down on weed seeds germinating. Then, last year we spread cover crop seeds like crimson clover and fava beans. We made a big dent in the amount of weeds that will germinate in the future. The final touch this Fall was to add our soil conditioner which consists of horse bedding (sawdust, horse pee and poop.) We compost it for several months until it is a wonderfully soft, sweet smelling consistency. We applied about 4 inches of it to the entire area where the garlic will be planted, then tilled it in deeply. This technique is something we have been doing for several years for growing our WallaWalla onions. It is terrific for breaking up our heavy soils. Garlic and onions both like lighter, well-drained soil.

We planted about 1500 cloves of garlic. We decided to plant two different varieties: Inchelium Red and Silver Rose. They are both softnecks which mean they store well. We chose these two varieties for their pungent true garlic flavor (a lot of softneck garlic is quite mild) as well as their good sized cloves. Next June, when harvesting starts, we hope you'll agree that these are the best!!
