A landmark in Eugene, the Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House is the Queen Anne-style Victorian mansion located on the south side of Skinner Butte, across from the train station. Their parking lot is accessed from 3rd Ave and Pearl.
The house was built in 1888 and sits on a 1.12 acre property. It is now owned by the City of Eugene (and administered by the non-profit Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson Associates). It serves the community as a public park space, museum, historical landmark, and rental facility.
The Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House is named after its three owners; Dr. T.W. Shelton and his wife Adah Lily Lucas Shelton (who had it built for $7,000), Alberta (née Shelton) and Robert McMurphey, and Doctors Curtis and Eva Johnson, who purchased it in 1951 (for $30,000).
If you might like to: provide guided tours of this National Register property, help with high teas and other special events, assist with the design and installation of exhibits, and/or consult on the development and presentation of new educational programs, please contact Amy H. Crain, Executive Director, Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House, (541) 484-0808, director@smjhouse.org, or come for a visit. SMJ House is open to the public 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Tuesday through Friday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm Saturday & Sunday.
Some volunteer activities, such as teas and program development, may take place outside of public hours. Your time commitment is your choice. There is no monthly hourly requirement, and both short term and long term projects are available. An information meeting is held monthly, usually the last Tuesday of every month, 4:00 pm at SMJ House, 303 Willamette Street, Eugene.
