Cougar Reservoir is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers (from their office in Lowell).
With the beauty of the McKenzie River and a good reputation for trout fishing and several boat launches, this scenic 1,280 acre lake offers many recreational opportunities. There are visitor viewpoints at both sides of the Cougar Dam that offer spectacular views of the valley downstream and the vistas upstream around the lake. Most of the recreation areas are located within the mountainous Willamette National Forest and are managed by the U.S. Forest Service as well as the Hoodoo Recreations Services.
LOCATION: 15 miles southeast of Blue River
ACCESS: From Blue River, travel 4 miles east on Hwy 126 to Aufderheide Drive (FS Road 19). It is three miles from the junction of FS Road 19 and Hwy 126 to Cougar Dam. Drive over the dam to access campgrounds and boat launches.
FACILITIES: Echo Boat Launch - day use picnic tables, vault toilets, and boat launch
Slide Creek Campground - 16 sites, trailer parking without hookups, fire rings, drinking water, vault toilets, tables, boat launch, and swimming pad
Cougar Crossing Campground - 12 sites,trailer parking without hookups, fire rings, tables, portable toilets in summer, NO water
Sunnyside Campground - 13 sites, not recommended for motor homes and trailers, fire rings, vault toilet, tables, NO water
ACTIVITIES: camping, picnicking, boating, swimming, fishing, water skiing
SERVICES: Food, gas and lodging are available in the nearby communities of Blue River and McKenzie Bridge.
ABOUT the RESERVOIR: The reservoir is maintained at a high level for scenic and recreational enjoyment from May through August.
WATER LEVEL: Six miles long, 1,280 acres when full, dam is 1,600 feet long and 452 feet high. Water levels and boat ramp accessibility information is available from the Oregon State Marine Board website. Look for Cougar Reservoir in the section titled "Willamette Basin Reservoirs."
COMMENTS: Be watchful for obstructions near the shoreline such as submerged stumps, logs, and rocks. Small craft are advised to stay out of open waters when winds become threatening as dangerous waves can build up suddenly.
